How the deduction works
A Finnish sole trader (toiminimi) cannot pay itself the tax-free kilometre allowance an employer pays staff. Instead, business trips driven with a privately-owned vehicle earn an additional deduction (lisävähennys) at the rate the Tax Administration sets each year: in 2026 0.55 €/km for a car or van, 0.42 €/km for a motorcycle and 0.23 €/km for a moped. The deduction reduces business income, so the tax saved depends on your own rate.
Example: 1,000 km of business driving a month is 12,000 km a year, a deduction of 6,600 €. At a 30 % tax rate that is about 1,980 € less tax.
Supplements raise the rate in specific cases, such as towing a trailer (+0.09 €/km) or carrying equipment over 80 kg (+0.04 €/km). The calculator shows the base rate; RouteLog applies supplements per trip.
What the deduction requires
The Tax Administration accepts the deduction only against a mileage log. For every trip it must show:
- the date
- start and end points, and the route where relevant
- the purpose (customer, delivery, purchase…)
- kilometres driven
- the vehicle, plus odometer readings at the start and end of the year
Lists reconstructed from memory are generally rejected, so record trips as they happen — or let your phone do it. Read the full self-employed mileage guide.
